Walwa is situated on the Murray River Road, not far from the Murray River. A scenic 45 minutes drive from Corryong, Walwa is a popular place for those who enjoy a variety of water sports including kayaking, swimming and fishing and those who are looking for a quiet, relaxing getaway.
European settlers appreciated the area's beauty when they first arrived in 1837. The Walwa township was surveyed by 1870. Tin deposits brought miners to the Walwa area in the 1860's. A postal agency operated in Walwa in the 1860s and was part of what was then the longest horseback mail run in Victoria. The mail run delivered weekly between Wodonga and the Upper Murray. In the 1880's horse and coach mail delivery began. Today, the Walwa post office is situated in Walwa's main street and services Walwa and the surrounding area. In the 1920's a butter factory was built by locals which produced cheese and powdered milk, after serving the community for almost forty three years, the factory closed in 1963.
Today many locals in Walwa are involved with the cattle and sheep farms which surround the township. With a population today of approximately 300, Walwa is home to a general store, cafe, hotel, art gallery, tractor and machinery sales and service centre, panel beating business, veterinary clinic, bush nursing centre, caravan park and a primary school; Walwa is a small but active community with its own radio station to keep locals and visitors informed and entertained. Head to the Walwa General Store to collect your groceries and the necessities for your camping trip, fuel up your car and boat and before you head off make sure you enjoy a delicious home cooked meal and meander amongst the vintage treasures.
Walwa has a range of accommodation options, including a perfectly located caravan park on the outskirts of town which sits right on the beautiful Murray River. Powered and unpowered sites are available and the park is located immediately beside a boat ramp, providing easy access to the Murray River. The nearby Upper Murray Resort can host weddings and functions and is also available for couples and families to enjoy a getaway. Individual cabins are dotted around the hillside, providing privacy, wood fires and balconies to make the most of spectacular views. The resort also boasts two swimming pools, tennis courts, billiards table, canoe hire and well tended gardens to explore. Walwa also offers a beautiful riverside golf course. Visitors to Walwa can easily access the Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park, which is home to one of the largest monoliths in the southern hemisphere, 1.5 times the size of Uluru.
