Overlooking the Khancoban Dam (pondage) is the small picturesque town of Khancoban. Built in the 1960s to accommodate around seven thousand people who came to the Snowy Mountains to work on the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme, today Khancoban is the home to approximately 300 residents.
Contructed as part of the Snowy Mountains Scheme, the Khancoban Dam is a popular destination on a hot summer's day, where visitors and locals alike can enjoy swimming, fishing, canoeing or water-skiing. After a refreshing day of being in the water, why not utilise the BBQ facilities available at the Boat Ramp picnic area and watch as the sun sets over the water.
Just over the road, is the Khancoban Roadhouse and Alpine Cafe where you are sure to be able to find something tasty to satisfy your appetite.
Looking for something a little different; the Khancoban township is the perfect place for those who love to ride bikes. Take in the picturesque views of the dam and surrounding mountains as you peddle your way around Spillway Road or stop and smell the roses at the Lady Hudson Rose Garden, named after the wife of Sir William Hudson, who guided the development of the Snowy Mountains Scheme for the majority of the construction phase.
Local residents and visitors to the area can learn more about the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme by taking a tour of the Murray 2 Power Station.
For those who love a scenic drive/ride, Khancoban is the ideal place to start your next Koscuiszko National Park adventure whether its bush walking, four wheel driving, and camping during the warmer months or skiing and snowboarding during the snow season.
An alternative route for a sight-seeing in the Upper Murray is the Great River Road that follows the Murray River from Khancoban to Bethanga near Albury Wodonga.
Once here, it will soon become clear that one day in Khancoban, will not be long enough. Plan to stay a little longer at one of the many family friendly accommodation available to visitors such as the Khancoban Lakeside Caravan Park, located on the Alpine Way with stunning lake views or across the road at the Alpine Inn where you can also enjoy a mouth watering meal.

Khancoban
Indigenous significance
The Khancoban Valley is located on a site of cultural significance - a well-trodden pathway or ‘songline’ to the Munyang (pronounced money-ang) - today known as the Snowy Mountains.
High country cattlemen
After European settlement, the pathway became part of the journey made by high country cattlemen and their families to their isolated properties and summer alpine leases.
