See & Do
Nature & Culture
The Upper Murray is home to many a natural wonder and cultural delight.
Our pristine rivers, eucalypt-scented forests, and rolling hills are havens for biodiversity, hosting wedge-tail eagles, bogong moths, bandicoots, and various other monotremes, marsupials and macropods. Against this striking backdrop the region also hosts a variety of events, including folk festivals, vintage rallies, country races and the renowned Man from Snowy River Bush Festival.
Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park
For nature lovers, exploring Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park will be a highlight of your Upper Murray adventure. Offering stunning views of granite mountains, alpine forests, waterfalls, and creeks, you might choose to hike to the top of Pine Mountain, one of the largest monoliths in Australia, or challenge yourself on the trail to Mount Burrowa, the highest peak in the park. Tread quietly and you may just meet a few kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, or wombats, along with a few of the many bird species native to the region.
Avondale Gardens
Secret gardens, exotic trees, and lush picnic spots - you’re sure to find a peaceful place to just wander and be at Avondale Gardens. Situated on the old 'Avondale' homestead site, this oasis was established by Peg Bird, a resident at the homestead during the 1940s. While the homestead itself is long gone, you can still bring a picnic, admire the gardens, and appreciate both Peg’s vision and the hard work of the local volunteers who maintain this hidden piece of heaven.
Man From Snowy River Museum
Local stories, national pride, and a step back in time - with such an extensive collection of items on display, you’ll want to take your time at The Man From Snowy River Museum. Located in Corryong, in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, the volunteer-run museum boasts items of national and local significance, including highlights such as the Jim Simpson POW knitted rug, a comprehensive collection of early skiing memorabilia, and Jack Riley mementos and stories.
Farrans Lookout
Settler history, a scenic drive, and breathtaking views - located along the Murray River Road, between Tintaldra and Towong, Farran’s Lookout is the best vantage point to look out across the Upper Murray River and the Australian Alps. Named after the Farran family, who were early settlers in the area, from here you can also spy the settlement of Towong and the Towong Hill Station, which was once the home of Elyne Mitchell - celebrated author of the Silver Brumby series and other books on the Snowy Mountains.
