Ours is a valley filled with quiet beauty and the sounds of nature

Gold mining and dairy heritage, bush culture and unspoilt scenery – where fishing, bushwalking, cycling, meandering upon old gold-mining sites or simply relaxing are the prime attractions.

The Pioneer Mine

Modern Mitta Mitta owes its existence to gold mining, which began in 1884 and ceased in 1904. The heritage-listed Pioneer Mine was the site of a successful open-cut gold mining operation. Today, you can spend hours exploring the site of the old mine, which has evolved into a self-contained and fern-filled ecosystem with two nature-filled walking loops.

Mitta Wildlife

As you explore the bushlands, river flats and alpine forests of the Mitta Valley, keep an eye out for a quiet parade of koalas and kangaroos, platypus and wombats. The valley is also home to some pretty special birds, with the Eastern Spinebill, Bower Bird, Peregrine Falcon and the Grey Shrike-Thrush being notable examples. Eagle-eyed wanderers might even catch a glimpse of the fabled Mitta Panther, but are more likely to glimpse darting lizards and spotted tree frogs.

Art and Culture

Home to a small, but vibrant, art and food scene, the Mitta Valley offers galleries, craft shops and beer, and a community of local and regional artists. Explore the Witches’ Garden, Butchers Hook, Mitta Brewery and the Mitta General Store for a variety of artisanal pieces and fare, or visit the Dartmouth Alpine Wildlife Gallery and admire the natural beauty of the valley on canvas with a cup of tea and scones.
