Regional Ride Map
Whether it be road, gravel or rail trails that tickle your fancy, the Lake Hume region has it covered
The High Country Rail Trail
Following the route of a former railway line from Wodonga to Shelley, the 80 km long Rail Trail hugs the shoreline of Lake Hume, crosses historic trestle bridges, and finishes at Shelley Station (once the highest railway station in Victoria). Whether cycling or hiking, the trail’s many sections offer gourmet stops, historic villages, and stunning scenery. Most of the trail has gentle climbs of less than 50m, but those keen for a challenge can tackle the final 20 km section from Darbyshire to Shelley, which is an entirely uphill ride, rising 550m through peppermint scented forests.
Loops Around the Lake
Catering to all levels of skill and experience, this network of cycling tracks are a great way to take in the lake and its surrounds. The Loop, a famously challenging 104 km ride, hugs the shoreline of the Lake, passing through townships including Granya, Bellbridge, and Bonegilla. The aptly named Bethanga Beast, a 78 km grind, is best left to those who prefer their scenic routes with a side of steep climbs and fast descents, while pedallers who prefer a more level ride can cruise along the quiet, sealed paths, largely uninterrupted – perfect for families, couples and solo riders alike.
The Lake Hume Ride
If you’re more leather than lycra, the Lake Hume Ride is the kind of twisty, touring loop that gets a motorcyclist’s blood pumping. Scenic, sweeping, and smooth, the 52 km loop takes you from Tallangatta, along the Murray Valley Highway towards Corryong, up through Granya township, down and across the Bethanga Bridge towards Bonegilla and eventually winds up back where you started. For those who like their rides a little longer, the Tallangatta Return via Bellbridge, Jingellic, Towong and Corryong takes in over 250 km of State and National Park, plateaus and mountain valleys.
