Stunning valley roads or epic alpine tracks
Whether you like your ride smooth and scenic, or you prefer the challenge of something more rough and rugged, the Mitta Valley is a Mecca for cyclists of all persuasions. So, what’ll it be? (Watch out for the opening of our new Mitta Valley Mountain Bike Park, which is currently under construction.)
Regional Ride Map
Whether it be road or gravel that tickles your fancy, the Mitta Valley has it covered.
Our Valley Highway
The Omeo Highway runs from Tallangatta in the north to Omeo in the south, before morphing into the Great Alpine Road, which runs to Lakes Entrance. In our view, it’s the Mitta Valley section from Eskdale through to Anglers Rest that’s arguably the most scenic, attracting serious cyclists and touring enthusiasts alike – you’ll often find the road all to yourself as you wind through gorgeous green valleys, alpine plains and river flats. If you get all the way to Omeo, be sure to check out the awesome Omeo MTB Park.
Lockharts Gap
Linking the Mitta Valley with the top of the Kiewa Valley, the Lockharts Gap ride delivers exceptional scenery along a gravel road with a manageable gradient. On a clear day, the views stretch all the way to Lake Hume, while the descent into the Mitta Valley is known as one of the area’s best. Best done in spring or autumn (no ice), you can choose to loop back into the High Country Rail Trail, or take on other gravel roads, such as Trappers Gap, Bullhead Lane, or Eskdale Spur Track.
Tracks and Trails
For the serious cyclist, the Mitta Valley can be reached off the High Country Rail Trail that starts in Albury Wodonga (92 km). Or, there’s the Eskdale to Dartmouth Dam ride (78 km return), which offers quiet single-lane roads through open valleys before delivering climbs through dinosaur forest and on to Dartmouth Dam. Alternatively, there’s the out-and-back ‘half-ride’ from Eskdale to Mitta Mitta via Yabba Road (or vice-versa), which presents a quiet and peaceful roll beside the Mitta Mitta River (38 km return).
